What are some examples of the best business strategies in history?
Alphabet (Google) has an insanely effective strategy — dominate then monetise.
It has been so effective that it’s been a key driver in becoming dominant in:
- Search (Google)
- Browsers (Chrome)
- Video sharing (YouTube)
- Email (Gmail)
- Smartphone OS (Android)
- Maps (Google Maps)
- Self-driving cars (Waymo)
It is also using this strategy to try to achieve dominance in:
- Laptops (Chromebook)
- Office suite (Google Docs)
So when Alphabet goes into a new industry it does not focus on revenues. It focuses on domination. Pricing is initially extremely aggressive, often free.
The thinking is that once dominant, monetising will be easy. And it will.
The strategy needs a lot of cash, which Alphabet has, as well as a very long-term view.
So good it’s evil…
